Brookings High student council outlines spring activities, accessibility-focused events

Brookings High School student council members presented a spring report to the Brookings School District 05-1 board, summarizing this year’s fundraisers, inclusive events and plans through the end of the school year.
The student leaders told the board they organized several fundraisers and community events, including volunteer bell-ringing for the Salvation Army, a free indoor movie night for families, a VFW pancake feed service shift, and pop-a-shot fundraising at about eight home basketball games. "We believe that every Brookings High School student should feel welcome and included no matter the necessary accommodations," one presenter said, describing a sensory family formal the council and the peer-to-peer class hosted for students who may be overwhelmed by typical high-school dances.
The report noted other recurring activities: two formals (one in November and one in February) that the council plans to continue running entirely by students; a fundraising drive during Homecoming of the Arts Week for Children’s Miracle Network; and a reach-out to elementary students for an ABC-countdown helper day at Midare (Midairi) Elementary.
Looking ahead, the council said it will hold an outdoor end-of-year movie (free popcorn and lemonade), and a banquet for student council members and families on Monday, May 19 to distribute letters and certificates and show a slideshow of the year’s activities. They also plan reading-buddy visits back to Madera (sic) and to help host the 2025 senior breakfast, including handing out superlatives and collecting Bobcat merchandise for sale at upcoming sporting events.
The board asked about the students’ grade level; the presenters said they were all juniors. Board members praised the sensory formal and the students’ fundraising strategies and thanked their advisors for supporting the volunteer work.
The presentation was delivered by Clara Delbridge (treasurer), Rachel Malinky (co-president), Amelia Wendell (officer of communications) and Lauren Bortnam (secretary).
