State approves 10-03 waiver; Franklin County gains three professional-development days over next three years

Superintendent Dustin Gering announced that the district’s 10-03 waiver application has been approved, allowing the Franklin County Community School Corporation to schedule three professional-development days for staff in each of the next three years.
What the waiver does
The approved waiver will reduce student contact days to 177 and create three district-level professional learning days per year for the next three years; those staff days will be scheduled and are not intended to be used to replace snow days. The district’s leadership said the days will allow extended, corporation-wide training on reading and math curriculum, data review, PBIS (positive behavioral interventions and supports) and related topics.
“I’m really excited to be able to bring this to them for the next 3 years, 3 days where we come together and we talk about data,” Superintendent Dustin Gering said. “These are the goals of these 3 days, and to see significant time that we can spend on those topics for our teachers is just fantastic.”
Calendar changes and logistics
The superintendent said the district will issue a proposed calendar for the coming year and bring the calendar back to the board in June for approval; the district’s start date will not change, he added. One minor adjustment required counting and moving the last day of school by one day this year to ensure the required number of instructional days.
Operational notes
District leaders indicated some groups (e.g., classified contractors such as bus drivers) might be scheduled for targeted activities, training or assignments on professional-development days; examples from other districts included CPR training and vehicle cleaning for contracted staff. The district said more details on how each staff group will use the days will be provided with the proposed calendar.
