Fire chief highlights zero civilian fire fatalities last year, smoke-detector push and equipment needs

Lincoln Park — Fire Department leadership told the City Council on May 12 that the department responded to 2,298 runs over the most recent four-month reporting period and emphasized a multi-year smoke-detector distribution effort that officials credit with reducing civilian fire deaths.

"I think this is tangible evidence that the fire code enforcement team work is not only effective, it saves lives," the chief said.

Training, specialty teams and operations The department reported roughly 425 hours of documented training this quarter (excluding daily in-station training). Paramedics must document continuing education per state guidelines; the department also reported internal training in advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), advanced hazmat life support and ICS-300 for specialty-team members. The department roster includes specialty designations: three HAZMAT team members, three arson investigators, logistics personnel and one member pursuing dive-team certification.

Grants, capital and equipment outlook The chief reported that some federal grant programs (AFG and SAFER) are suspended at the time of the meeting; however, the department received replacement fire hose in recent months (more than 12,000 feet replaced over the past 18 months). Planned capital needs listed by the chief included a replacement fire engine within five years (price estimated around $1.5 million in current dollars) and a ladder truck within eight years (estimated $1.5–$2.5 million depending on specifications). The chief also said the department will sign an agreement with Stryker EMS Plus to replace EMS stretchers and related equipment and will purchase 15 heart monitors — nine for the department and six to outfit police cars.

Community events and outreach The department plans an open house on Oct. 5 and a 100-year anniversary celebration on June 1 (public event, noon–3 p.m.). The chief encouraged council members and residents to attend.

Safety reminder In response to a council question about recent house explosions in neighboring jurisdictions, the chief advised residents who smell gas to evacuate and call 911 immediately. He described an incident in which accumulated gas was ignited; the department and DTE participated in the investigation.
