Lakewood committee reviews draft zoning-code overhaul to speed approvals and add housing options

Lakewood’s Housing, Planning & Development Committee on May 12 reviewed preliminary recommendations for a broad update to the city’s zoning code that city staff and consultants say is intended to align regulations with the community vision, simplify approval steps and unlock additional housing options near major corridors.
Assistant Director Boss, who presented the draft recommendations produced with consultant Houseal Lavigne, said the project is currently “step 3 of 7” in a process originally planned for about 18 months. “These are the slides from the the zoning policy advisory committee meeting that we held, in the March, I think, March 18,” Boss told the committee, summarizing community engagement and the consultant’s analysis.
The draft recommendations, grouped under economic development, housing, community wellness and mobility, include: creating new overlays (adaptive reuse and transit-oriented development), revising commercial and industrial permitted-use tables, establishing a municipal zoning district for city and school facilities, adopting objective design and development standards to allow administrative…
