Rules Committee recommends Rebecca Saroyan for Board of Appeals after supporters testify

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors Rules Committee on Monday voted to forward Mayor Lurie’s nomination of Rebecca Saroyan to the Board of Appeals with a recommendation of approval.
Saroyan told the committee she is a native San Franciscan with nearly 30 years of legal experience, most of it in public-sector roles. She said she attended UC Law (referred to in the hearing as Hastings), served in the San Francisco City Attorney’s Office, and later worked as assistant regional counsel for the U.S. General Services Administration. Saroyan said she would bring a focus on impartial hearings and due process to the Board of Appeals.
John Trezevina, identified in the hearing as president of the Board of Appeals but speaking in a personal capacity, and community member Griffin Lee each spoke in support of Saroyan. Trezevina said Saroyan’s combination of legal training and dedication to city service make her well suited for a people-focused commission. Griffin Lee called Saroyan and her family “quality human beings” and urged approval.
Vice Chair Supervisor Cheryl moved to amend the committee motion by striking the word “rejecting” and to forward Saroyan’s nomination with a recommendation of approval. The committee recorded votes of "aye" from Vice Chair Supervisor Cheryl, Supervisor Matt Dorsey and Chair Supervisor Shamone Walton; the motion passed without objection. Public comment at the hearing included only speakers in favor; no opposition was recorded.
If approved by the full Board, Saroyan’s appointment would be for a term ending July 1, 2028. The committee file will include the nominee’s statement and public comments.
