Carlisle council schedules workshop discussion after councilor raises resolution opposing U.S. takeover of Gaza

A councilor raised a proposed resolution at the May 2025 council meeting calling for a public discussion and expressing opposition to U.S. takeover of Gaza if such action were to be pursued. The councilor described humanitarian concerns, cited child mortality and caloric deficits reported from northern Gaza, and read remarks including: “All that resolution says really is we should not, as a country, take over Gaza. Period.”

Councilors debated whether the item should remain on the table or proceed to a vote that night. Several members expressed support for holding a public conversation and for placing the matter on an upcoming workshop agenda rather than taking immediate action. One councilor noted the difficulty of addressing large, global crises from a small municipal platform but said a local statement could still matter symbolically. Another councilor said the resolution felt insufficient but supported discussion at a workshop to hear community views.

A motion was made to keep the item on the table and schedule a public workshop meeting to discuss the resolution; the council voted unanimously to table the item and place it on the June 4 workshop agenda for public comment and further consideration. Councilors said they would invite public comment and aim to handle the matter transparently under sunshine rules rather than deciding the resolution behind closed doors.

The council did not adopt any policy at the May meeting; they will discuss the language and possible action at the scheduled workshop and invite public testimony.
