Board hears strong bookings and record hotel performance; international attendance lags cited

CIB staff reported strong hotel occupancy and convention bookings through March and April, with robust pipelines but slower decision pace from some international groups.
Capital Improvements Board staff told members that event bookings remain strong even where the number of events fell short of plan, and that downtown hotel and convention metrics produced record results through the first quarter.
Matt O'Brien, field house manager, said year-to-date the facility hosted five fewer events than planned but still exceeded revenue expectations. "We have had 5 fewer events than what we had planned," O'Brien said. "They were smaller concerts. But still revenues are better than what we planned." He noted upcoming events including high school basketball doubleheaders and the WNBA All-Star Game in July.
Larry, who presented the hotel occupancy report, said March produced a record March and a record year-to-date through Q1. He reported downtown occupancy of 69.7% for March and said Marion County hotel revenue was up about 2.6% year to date. "We're outperforming the general economy for the hotel world again," Larry told the board; he also said production pace was at about 72% and the sales pipeline was strong, with leads at 57% of the goal and 14% ahead of last year’s record pace.
Staff and sales leaders noted a slowing in international attendance decisions. Larry said associations with significant international attendance—particularly those drawing Canadians or Western Europeans—have been slower to confirm future contracts, which he and colleagues expect will create some near-term lag in pace before a pickup.
Monique, the convention center sales presenter, reported April convention center occupancy at 68.4% and noted attendance of 59,183 for the month. She said two shows occupied the entire building footprint in April—FDIC, which broke its all-time attendance record this year at 37,081, and the Craft Brewers Association show that brought roughly 7,500 attendees. Monique also previewed upcoming meetings including the Sweets & Snacks show and the Railway Interchange, and said the building would be dark for the Memorial Day weekend race period.
Board members asked questions and received briefings on moves to optimize event space and calendar conflicts with the football schedule.
