Commissioners debated the request before voting. Commissioner 3 opposed the variance, saying the board should “stick with our ordinance” to avoid setting a precedent that could allow large multi-tenant buildings to place multiple corner signs. Commissioner 2 and others said the corner location and visibility made the second sign reasonable; Commissioner 5 suggested shifting the proposed south-elevation sign slightly left on the wall panel to improve legibility from the street. The applicant, Sam Leppard of FASTSIGNS, said the site has customer pick-up activity and that a new adjacent building under construction will reduce the visibility of the existing sign, arguing that a second sign is practically useful: “there is some customer traffic here, customer pick up at this location as well.”
The board’s motion to approve (SV25-0004) specified approval “subject to our staff report dated 05/02/2025” and noted the applicant’s willingness to consider moving the proposed sign on the south elevation. The motion carried 6-1. The meeting record does not list individual board members’ vote-by-name in the transcript; the tally was announced by the chair.
Earlier in the meeting the board approved minutes from its Feb. 20 meeting by unanimous vote, 7-0.
No budgetary or permitting conditions beyond the staff report were identified in the discussion. The board adjourned and noted the next meeting on May 20.
