Big Valley FFA officers brief Mifflin County SD on greenhouse sales, fundraisers and banquet turnout

Abby, the chapter vice president, Elena, the chapter secretary, and Sean, the chapter treasurer, described year-round work in agricultural sciences classes, including ag-mechanics wood projects, plant-science greenhouse sales, an animal-clinic partnership and classroom dissections used for instruction. The students said the greenhouse sale began the day of the meeting and was scheduled to continue the next day.
The students reported fundraising and grant support: a grant recorded in the meeting as $2,303 plus two jackets provided by a national chapter, $4,500 raised from concessions at Penn State through a partnership with an outside vendor, and $3,650 raised to support their FFA banquet. The FFA officers told the board the banquet on May 2 drew 94 attendees, compared with 18 chapter members, and they described the event as a community celebration of student accomplishments.
Board members and attendees complimented the students on public-speaking and leadership. Mr. Irvin, who identified himself as a former FFA member, said he was impressed by the officers— speaking ability and appreciated being invited to the banquet. Several trustees praised the students— communication and organizational skills.
The students thanked a staff member named Cassette for securing a summer training grant that will fund curriculum and training for a food-science package; the board packet referenced the grant but did not state its dollar amount. The students said several members attended state conferences and leadership workshops and that the chapter—s community breakfast had featured a guest speaker, identified in the packet as David Rowe.
