Waukesha landmarks paint-and-repair grants on hold pending federal contract

City staff told the Waukesha Landmarks Commission that paint-and-repair grant awards are temporarily on hold while the city awaits a federal contract needed to disburse Community Development Block Grant (CDBG)-related funds.
Charlie, the commission staff presenter, said paint-and-repair grants are typically calculated at about 15% of a project's cost up to a $3,000 maximum per project. He told commissioners the commission should not place any paint-and-repair grants on an agenda until the city has an executed contract from the county CDBG coordinators.
Staff reported the city expects to receive the full $25,000 allocation for 2025 based on federal indications, and they hoped the contract would be signed in May. Charlie said there are three applications that have been submitted but placed on hold pending the contract. Separately, staff reported $22,805.50 remained from 2024 projects that had not been completed; however, an invoice for one of the larger outstanding 2024 grants arrived the afternoon of the meeting and staff expected to process that payment, which would reduce the leftover 2024 balance.
Commissioners asked staff to keep applicants and commissioners informed and to place the three pending applications on the agenda once the contract is in place. Charlie said, if all proceeds as expected, the commission could resume awarding paint-and-repair grants as soon as the June meeting.
