City unveils 'Playcation' summer brochure: camps, sports, library programs and CivicRec registration coming

City staff on Tuesday showcased El Centro’s summer recreation brochure and a slate of programs ranging from toddler classes and multisport summer camp to library reading events, adult classes and new features such as online registration via CivicRec.
Recreation Supervisor Gustavo Ibarra walked the council through offerings at the Conrad Harrison Youth Center and MLK community facilities: toddler programs, youth soccer clinics, jump/tumble/cheer, a themed “Time Travelers” summer camp, open gym and a large youth basketball program that registered over 300 participants last year. Ibarra said the city received more than 74 applicants for seasonal recreation leader positions and plans a mobile recreation unit to visit parks monthly.
Library Director Carla Mason previewed the summer reading schedule and special events funded by a California State Library grant of $15,709, including the Wild Wonders presentation, preschool story time, teen and adult craft programs, police/firefighter reading events and stargazing and hiking kit loans. Mason said the summer reading registration opens June 9 and the library expects heavy participation; staff noted a remaining $3,000 in the zip‑book program that will be exhausted before the grant renewal in November.
Adriana Nava and other staff noted the city is moving to CivicRec for online registration and field/lighting reservations; brochures are already posted online (staff projected printed copies within two to three weeks) and city staff will run outreach and promotional flyers. Council members praised the breadth of programming and suggested outreach at events and the ice‑cream social to assist residents with registration and to promote free or reduced swim fees for qualifying residents expected to return to council soon.
Staff said the aquatic center is busy during summer and the city is pursuing LA84 and Red Cross grants to offset personnel costs and expand free swim lesson offerings. The council received the presentation; no formal vote was required.
