County board reclassifies two budget-review meetings as open workshops

The Custer County Board of Commissioners voted on May 8 to convert two scheduled budget-review meetings (July 23 and October 22) into open workshops.
Commission staff said the change will allow department heads and as many elected officials as possible to attend without the requirement that the county clerk record the sessions as formal board meetings. The board discussed scheduling adjustments so the workshops could become longer, all-day sessions to accommodate detailed budget work.
A motion to change the meetings to open workshops was moved, seconded and approved by unanimous voice vote. Staff clarified that workshops will remain open to the public but that public-comment rules for workshops may be set by the chair; a member of the public asked whether workshops would allow public comment and was told that would be at the chair’s discretion.
The board directed staff to work on specific dates and times for the longer-format workshops and to provide notice when the new schedule is set.
