The commission chair opened discussion on a proposal to implement a spreadsheet‑style tracking process to streamline work group efforts, establish plans of action, and require regular progress updates. Commissioners discussed three initial priority topics to be managed through the new system: (1) fentanyl testing‑strip policy and related research collaboration with University of Texas students, (2) opioid response tied to housing access for individuals with repeated EMS/ED interactions, and (3) an analysis of public health budget allocations and potential effects of increasing public health spending from current levels.
Commissioners expressed support for a visual tracking tool to improve accountability and to show tangible progress on commission priorities over the remainder of the year. Several commissioners recommended that individuals or paired commissioners ‘‘own’’ each action item, provide monthly updates to staff (Danny), and coordinate with subject‑matter partners such as UT, Central Health, county staff and community‑based organizations.
A motion to adopt the new action‑item process was moved and seconded on the record; the chair announced the motion carried with all in favor. Earlier in the meeting the commission also moved and seconded to approve the April 2, 2025 minutes; that motion was carried on voice vote.
The commission directed staff to circulate the draft tracking table for review, solicit commissioner input on owners and sub‑tasks, and return with a finalized version at a subsequent meeting so the group can begin monthly reporting.
Future agenda items listed after the vote included adding Commissioner Dollhausen's final recommendations and review of a cold‑weather report referred to staff.
