The Lakeville Board of Health on May 7 reminded residents that mosquito season has begun and asked property owners to eliminate standing water to reduce breeding.
Ed, the Board of Health agent, said mosquitoes are present but the town is not seeing large numbers yet. He described a larvicide product the board uses for standing water that targets mosquito larvae and said it does not harm fish or other wildlife. Ed said the goal is to keep mosquito numbers low now so there will be fewer biting mosquitoes later in the season when West Nile virus risk can rise.
The board asked residents to report standing water so the town can apply larvicide drops where appropriate.
