Council tables MOU allowing Imperial Community College District to use senior center for classes

The Brawley City Council on May 6 tabled consideration of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) that would authorize the Imperial Community College District to use the city’s facilities — specifically the senior center — to host classes.

Assistant to the city manager Emmett Fried presented the item and said the principal objective of the proposed MOU was to “advance educational opportunities for our senior residents, enhance community services and establish [a] collaborative relationship between ICCD and the City of Brawley.” Fried said the proposed new MOU would start July 1 and that the resolution was placed at council members’ seats because of a last‑minute agenda glitch.

Councilmembers asked several questions about schedules, the kinds of classes ICCD would offer and whether the use would be limited to seniors. Fried replied ICCD’s primary offerings would be nutritional and other educational classes but that use would not be strictly limited to seniors; he said classes would be “sporadic as needed as requested by the public.”

Several councilmembers requested more detail before taking action, including an exhibit showing how ICCD intends to use the facility, a proposed schedule and a request that ICCD send a representative to answer questions in person. The council voted by voice to table the item and directed staff to return with the additional information and invite ICCD representatives to the next meeting.

No formal approval or fee decision was made at the May 6 meeting.
