Lake Oswego recognizes ‘If I Were Mayor’ contest winners; two students place statewide

Lake Oswego recognized winners of its annual ‘‘If I Were Mayor’’ youth contest at a council meeting where students received awards for poster and essay entries.
Mayor Buck and staff introduced the contest and praised student participation. Anna Catrinos, a Lake Oswego High School senior and member of the Youth Leadership Council, served on the selection committee and helped present awards.
Poster winners (grades 4–5) included an honorable mention for Finley for a poster focused on pedestrian accessibility and compliance with PROWAG accessible pedestrian systems; third place went to Tesla Campbell; second place to Lauren Klass for proposals including kid’s town halls and sensory‑friendly business hours; and first place to Cara (Kara) Miles for a poster promoting sustainability, inclusive playgrounds and community gardening. Cara’s first‑place win qualified her for the statewide Oregon Mayors Association contest.
In the middle‑school essay category (grades 6–8), the council recognized an honorable mention for Everest Gao (unable to attend) and presented third place to Alex Wu for an essay emphasizing safer, more sustainable public spaces and community gardens; second place to Lena Campbell for a focus on social, emotional well‑being and companionship for seniors; and first place to Sofia Hahn, whose essay linked walkability, sustainability and funding strategies and emphasized active listening by municipal leaders. Sofia’s win qualified her for the statewide contest.
Council staff announced results from the Oregon Mayors Association statewide competition: Sofia Hahn won second place statewide in the essay contest and received $300; Cara Miles won first place statewide in the poster contest and received the $500 grand prize and an invitation to the Oregon Mayors Association summer conference in Baker City.
Organizers said first, second and third winners in each local category received gift cards to local Lake Oswego businesses and that local winners and notable entries will be featured in the city newsletter and print publication.
