Architects and county staff presented a design-development update for Fire Station 27 on May 5, describing siting, civil engineering and preliminary budget expectations ahead of a planned competitive bid.
James Sloan, architect with 906 Studios, said the design has advanced to the design-development stage and that the intent is to use a pre-engineered metal building for the apparatus bay and traditional framing for living quarters. He described a double-loaded apparatus bay with openings on both sides and said the site is tight, requiring coordination on overhead utilities and traffic access.
Sloan and staff said they expected to go out to competitive bid on a completed construction drawing set; they also reported that the civil engineering team is coordinating relocation of an overhead electric line that would otherwise interfere with the site. Using experience from recent county stations, Sloan said the project is anticipated to be under $3 million “as we can be” before competitive bidding.
Why it matters: the station will serve the eastern portion of the county and provide apparatus bays and living quarters to respond to calls in that coverage area. The project will appear in the county capital budget process for funding consideration.
Next steps County staff said Station 27 will be included in the capital budget considerations at the upcoming budget meeting; architects will continue developing construction documents and a cost estimate to support a competitive bid process.
