Maury County commissioners debate releasing $2.7 million for courthouse, memorial building repairs; no final vote

Maury County’s Building Committee spent more than two hours on May 5 debating whether to release $2.7 million set aside for courthouse renovations and the Memorial Building, with commissioners repeatedly calling for detailed plans before authorizing major spending.

The committee opened discussion on a budget amendment to move funds into the current fiscal year. Chairman Howard said the steering committee for courthouse renovation was asking “to release the the funds that were set aside for the memorial Building and the courthouse” to proceed with asbestos abatement, third-floor build out for the district attorney’s office and to expose the rotunda for public viewing.

The request drew immediate questions. Commissioner Sumners said the earlier commission had set aside about $3 million in 2022 for both buildings and asked why the committee should release money without a full plan. “I think we’re putting the cart before the horse a little bit with there’s no plan,” Chairman Howard added, reflecting concerns about approving large expenditures without a defined design and schedule.
