Monterey County joins AARP age‑friendly network; supervisors mark Older Americans Month

Monterey County on May 26 proclaimed May as Older Americans Month and announced membership in AARP’s Age‑Friendly States and Communities network, county staff and AARP representatives told the Board of Supervisors.
Marlene (representing the Department of Social Services/Area Agency on Aging) told the board the Older Americans Act funds in‑home and community‑based services such as congregate and home‑delivered meals, transportation assistance, legal services, Medicare counseling, ombudsman services and caregiver supports. She and advisory council members urged continued advocacy for Older Americans Act programs after federal changes proposed by the Administration for Community Living were described as creating uncertainty for some services.
Rafi Nazarians, advocacy director for AARP California, told the board that Monterey County has joined the AARP network and that the county will undertake a planning process across livability domains, including housing, transportation and outdoor spaces. Nazarians said the county will have access to research, planning models and technical support as it implements the Local Aging and Disabilities Action Plan (LADAP).
County staff said the LADAP planning project has been underway about 18 months, and that the county will return to the board on June 6 with the adopted plan. Several local nonprofit partners and service providers — including Alliance on Aging, the Alzheimer’s Association, Meals on Wheels organizations and others — were present in the chambers for the recognition.
The board voted earlier in the meeting to approve the group of ceremonial resolutions; after a motion and second the chair called for the ayes and the motion carried. Board members thanked volunteers, providers and county staff who participate in aging services.
