The Garden City Board of Education voted to purchase the YMCA dome and approve a facilities-use agreement that assigns control of scheduling and future use to USD 457.
A district staff member explained the board is being asked to approve two agreements — a purchase agreement and a facilities-use agreement — that together transfer ownership and day-to-day control of the dome to the school district. The staff presentation said the district would pay $100,000 to purchase the dome; the YMCA board has already approved and signed the agreements.
Staff told the board the agreements limit the district’s exposure to any contracts the YMCA previously entered about the dome: the YMCA would remain responsible for obligations it contracted before the sale, while the district would be responsible only for obligations it agrees to after ownership transfers. The district will also assume responsibility for the structure and related taxes on the tarp/structure, while land and concrete property taxes remain exempt because the district owns the land.
Board members asked to see signed copies; staff confirmed signed copies were available and offered to delay action if the board wanted more time. A motion to approve the sale and facilities-use agreements was moved, seconded and carried by voice vote.
The staff presentation referenced ongoing facilities and maintenance coordination with building principals and noted the district expects to promote available services and scheduling with building staff upon transition.
