Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women/People (MMIW/P) awareness day: The mayor proclaimed May 5, 2025, as Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and People Awareness Day. Joni Kickingwoman of the Community Justice Division and Crime Victim Advocate program addressed council, describing the crisis as tied to historical jurisdictional and legal issues and calling for strengthened tribal sovereignty, better prosecution and improved support for survivors. Kickingwoman said, "This is not an epidemic. It's a system," and urged cultural competency, survivor support and legal reform.
Student presentation on renewable energy: Eli (Elia) Gertrins, a fifth-grade student from Missoula International School, presented a school project comparing renewable and nonrenewable energy sources and asked the city to consider additional renewable-energy options. The student's presentation covered environmental impacts, efficiency, long-term cost and renewability of sources such as solar, wind and geothermal.
City update: Mayor Davis told the student the city and county are working with Northwest Energy on a potential 50-megawatt green power project (solar or wind) in partnership with the city of Bozeman and County; officials said the program structure is under development and that businesses and residents would be able to purchase that green power when built.
Ending: The proclamations recognized local observances and the student presentation connected a local school project to the city's ongoing greenhouse-gas and clean-energy efforts.
