County approves $16,440 for playground mulch replacement after flooding at Burdett Park

The Vanderburgh County Board of Commissioners approved a $16,440 quote from Forest Commodities Inc. to replace engineered wood fiber (EWF) playground surfacing at Anchor Playground and at the campground play area in Burdett Park damaged by recent flooding.
Parks staff said the EWF was washed away during unusually high river levels after topography changes at the park, and they recommended using blown-in EWF to restore consistent surfacing at both sites. Parks staff said using a single vendor on both sites reduces mobilization costs.
Zach from the parks department said crews worked quickly during cleanup and that water levels have been dropping; he told the board pools were filling and the park would be open on Memorial Day. Commissioners thanked staff and approved the quote by recorded vote.
Commissioner Gable moved approval; Commissioner Canterbury seconded. Votes were recorded as yes from Commissioner Gable, Commissioner Canterbury and President Elpers.
Staff said they will consult with the engineer’s office about any precautions to reduce future washouts at the park’s east end, which staff described as an area that takes on substantial water when river levels reach about 46–5 (speaker's phrasing).
