Twin Valley sets summer learning camp, kindergarten orientations; plans use of $5,600 structured literacy grant

The Twin Valley School District’s instructional committee reported several program updates during the May 12 board meeting, including details about a summer learning camp, kindergarten orientation dates and a small structured-literacy grant that must be spent by June 30.

The district described a summer “Mystery Masters” learning camp scheduled for June 23–26 at the Twin Valley Elementary Center (TBEC). The camp is funded with federal Title I pilot funds, has 11 teachers and four support staff assigned, can serve up to 90 students and had about 55 students enrolled at the time of the report. The camp will provide ELA, math and daily science activities; transportation and meals will be provided.

The board also reviewed kindergarten orientation dates: an orientation at the recreation center (date referenced as tomorrow in the meeting), Honey Brook on May 16 and Twin Valley Elementary Center on May 21. Building principals are preparing parent packets with school schedules, supply lists, volunteer clearance guidance and information about PTOs.

District staff said the district comprehensive plan was resubmitted to the state after a small typographical correction and they expect final state approval but noted the state response process is slow.

Instructional leaders described a structured literacy grant of $5,600 that must be allocated by June 30. Staff said they met with reading specialists across elementary and middle schools to prioritize purchases and professional development; the district may prepay some professional development to obligate the funds before the deadline and will report selections at a future committee meeting.

The board asked for a final update on a middle-school schedule change (from block to period scheduling) and requested information about any lessons learned.
