Tavares recreation director reports rising participation, new programs and events

The Tavares recreation department told the City Council on May 7 that participation in city programs is rebounding since the COVID low and highlighted new and expanded offerings for children, seniors and families.
Scott (recreation director) and program staff reported the city ran a spring Babe Ruth season with about 150 youth players and three all‑star teams in district play. The department said overall non‑Babe‑Ruth participation in recreation programs rose from a COVID low back to 2,821 participants in the most recent 12‑month period. Staff noted special events such as a father‑daughter dance (375 attendees), the July 4 parade preparations and an interactive Easter "egg venture" scavenger hunt that drew families across the city.
Recreation leader Kayla Gaines' Full Steam Ahead program, aimed at homeschool and enrichment participants, ran in March and included curriculum and site tours; the department said it hosted a maximum of 25 students for that program. Senior offerings that once were monthly are now weekly, with activities ranging from karaoke and bingo to line dancing, and a "Take a Hike" walking program led by community volunteers provides regular socialization and exercise for older adults.
The presentation emphasized community feedback: coaches and participants praised staff efforts and volunteers, and staff noted plans to expand successful programs. Council members lauded the department's work and encouraged staff to continue seeking budget support for promising programs such as Full Steam Ahead.
Staff said the regional park facilities and field rentals remain in demand and that staff will continue to track participation and event outcomes to shape future offerings. The department asked council to support continued investment in recreation amenities and program staffing to sustain the rebound in participation.
