The Board of Supervisors passed on first reading an ordinance on May 6 to create the Alexandria Theater Special Use District at the northwest corner of Geary Boulevard and 18th Avenue in the Richmond district.
Supervisor Chan, who introduced the legislation, said the project balances neighborhood preservation with housing production. The ordinance establishes a special-use zoning district that allows up to eight stories and 75 residential units (primarily two- and three-bedroom units), requires 12 percent on-site affordable housing, and includes ground-floor commercial space. The theater’s facade, marquee and certain interior elements (including murals and the chandelier as described in the planning record) are to be preserved and incorporated into the development.
Chan thanked planning staff and San Francisco Heritage and noted developer York Lee’s willingness to preserve architectural features while delivering family housing. The item passed on first reading without objection.
Ending: The item will return to the board for second reading and final adoption; planning and preservation conditions from the special-use district and the planning department’s findings will be implemented during permit review and project design.
