KEDCO highlights Slate Automotive attraction, housing MOUs and global outreach

Peggy said Slate Automotive “could have landed anywhere, and they chose Warsaw,” and described the project as a reindustrialization of the former LSC Donnelley site. She said Slate’s campus could create as many as 2,000 jobs and that the company hopes the first vehicles will roll off the line near the end of next year. Peggy said KEDCO is still operating under non-disclosure constraints and could not provide full public details at the meeting.
“KEDCO brings projects that we have vetted and looked at from every level objectively,” Peggy said, asking for the commission’s trust as the agency advances projects to local elected officials.
Housing, retention and outreach
Peggy reported KEDCO has signed memoranda of understanding with local partners — she named “Heather Presley Cowen Club 7 20 and mission build” — and said seven communities have contacted KEDCO for help developing attainable housing for teachers, police and firefighters. She said one community has begun soil testing and that KEDCO is working with smaller communities to pursue Community Amenities Program funds.
She also described partnerships with Zimmer Biomet, Plug and Play and Orthoworks to promote Kosciusko County at the Global Entrepreneurship Congress in Indianapolis and said KEDCO is coordinating educational events with Purdue MEP, including an AI-focused class and a manufacturing roundtable.
Why it matters
KEDCO framed these activities as part of a strategy to retain existing employers, attract new ones, and support housing and infrastructure so workers can live in the county. The Slate Automotive site’s rapid reuse of a large vacant plant was presented as an unusual positive outcome for local economic development.
