The Eagle Pass Independent School District board on May 13 approved multiple personnel actions and the superintendent’s annual compensation recommendation after a closed‑session review.
In open session the board voted unanimously to authorize hiring to fill vacancies and to approve presented term contracts. The board then approved the superintendent’s compensation plan recommendation for the 2025–26 school year, which includes local step increases and additional paid leave days; the measure passed unanimously.
Superintendent Jorge Mijares recommended local step increases as follows: a $50 local step increase per year for full‑time teachers, counselors, librarians and registered nurses with zero to four years of experience (based on a 187‑day contract) and a $100 local step increase per year for those with five or more years of experience (also based on 187 days). Mijares also recommended that each employee eligible for benefits earn additional paid leave days (5, 6 or 7 days) based on months of service and administrative regulations tied to board policy DEC (local).
Mijares told trustees the district is awaiting action in the Texas Legislature and that any state funding directed to salary increases would be passed through to employees if the Legislature designates the dollars for that purpose. He noted a separate state proposal under discussion would provide a $6,000 supplement for employees in some bills, which the superintendent said would increase the district’s starting teacher pay to about $61,000 if enacted.
The motion to hire personnel was moved by a trustee and seconded on the floor; the board later approved term contracts and the compensation plan by unanimous votes. The superintendent said the administration will return to the board if legislative action requires changing the adopted budget or the compensation schedule before July 1.
Board actions recorded after the closed session included: approval to hire personnel to fill reported vacancies, approval of presented term contracts and approval of the superintendent’s compensation plan that includes the local step increases and leave‑day adjustments. Mijares emphasized the district’s intent to implement locally funded steps while monitoring the Legislature for supplemental funding that could be applied to salaries.
