The Temple City Council on May 13 voted 4-0 to accept the resignation of District 3 Council Member Susan Long, who cited her husband’s serious illness and her own fracture as reasons she cannot continue to serve. Long’s resignation was delivered to the mayor and council in two letters read aloud during the meeting.
Mayor Pro Tem Walker moved to accept the resignation; Council Member Mike Pilkington seconded the motion. Council members approved the acceptance by a 4-0 vote.
Long’s letter to staff and to the council said her husband will continue to need substantial care and that she will not be available for the time required for council duties. The mayor and multiple council members spoke in tribute to Long’s years of service (on the council since 2017) and her prior service on the school board. City staff praised Long’s engagement on land-use and community-growth issues.
Council and staff outlined the process to fill the vacancy. Because the remaining term has less than one year, the council has authority under the city charter to appoint a replacement. Council staff said the city will post the vacancy and accept online applications starting May 14; applications will be due by 5 p.m. on May 28. Council will review applications at a special called workshop on May 29, conduct candidate interviews in early June (proposed June 2 or June 3), and may place an item on the June 5 regular meeting to make an appointment. If the council is not prepared to appoint on June 5, the appointment may be delayed to a regular meeting later in June or into July.
Council members repeatedly emphasized finding a qualified candidate who will work collaboratively with the council and staff to continue ongoing projects and represent District 3 residents.
