Committee approves upgraded chief paramedic classification for Emergency Services

The Public Safety Committee approved a proposal to set the salary and civil-service grade for a chief paramedic position by upgrading an existing senior paramedic post, officials said.
Bonnie Peters, Principal Account Clerk for Emergency Services, presented the proposal and said the position was included in the county's 2025 budget as a placeholder and that converting a senior paramedic into a chief paramedic is budget-neutral for the current year. Peters said the county expects the promoted employee's hourly rate to move from about $31.62 to $33.07 based on the job specifications and the applicable contract, but that the higher rate was already budgeted.
Peters said the chief paramedic would supervise approximately 28 full-time paramedics and senior paramedics and numerous casual staff, act as a liaison between the department and the physician and the community, and cover on-call duties for most weeks; the existing on-call pay will be discontinued to offset costs.
Committee members asked whether the change created a new position; staff said the move upgrades an existing filled position and that one senior-paramedic vacancy will remain unfilled on the books. The committee approved the change by voice vote; the transcript records the motion as carried without a named roll-call tally.
