Student Services committee reviews attendance interventions and prepares for WIAA name, image and likeness rules
Summary
The district reviewed attendance procedures and interventions used to address truancy and received notice that the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association approved name, image and likeness (NIL) language; district athletic directors will prepare guidance for student-athletes and families.
The Student Services Committee reported May 6 and summarized that review for the full board on May 14, outlining district attendance strategies and the imminent implementation of WIAA name, image and likeness (NIL) rules.
Attendance: Mark Lenerer, director of student services, reviewed state attendance statutes, district policies and procedures and local collaboration through the Waukesha County truancy task force. The district described a tiered set of responses — daily automated notifications, requests for medical excuses, habitual truancy meetings and targeted interventions — that aim to strengthen partnerships between families and schools. Administrators said the district’s attendance rates compare favorably among the state’s 10 largest districts.
WIAA NIL: The committee also reported that the Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association’s membership voted 293–108 to approve NIL language. Committee materials noted NIL goes into effect when the WIAA releases its next bulletin (the last week of May). Administrators estimated that only roughly 1% of student-athletes will participate in NIL opportunities and said athletic directors will prepare family guidance and education. The district emphasized that, like other WIAA regulations, knowledge of and compliance with NIL rules will be the responsibility of each student-athlete and their family.
Why it matters: attendance work addresses state truancy requirements and student supports; NIL changes could affect high-school athletes’ outside-earnings opportunities and require new district-level guidance and advisories for families.
Next steps: student services staff will continue working with schools and the county truancy task force on interventions and communications. Athletic directors will produce guidance for student-athletes and families to explain eligibility, disclosure and compliance obligations under WIAA guidance.
