Board hears facilities update: HVAC controller upgrades, sprinkler repairs, bids for projects and device disposal plan

During committee reports on May 27, the Lawrence Public Schools Board of Education received a facilities update covering ongoing and upcoming capital and maintenance work.

Anne, a board member who summarized the facilities meeting, said bids for middle-school theatrical capital work were issued May 13 and are scheduled to open June 3. The committee is also preparing bids for track resurfacing at secondary schools.

The board was told that HVAC controllers in the district office building require upgrades and that fire sprinkler system repairs are needed at multiple district buildings. Anne said the HVAC controller work "is absolutely necessary" and appeared on that night’s agenda for approval as part of routine facilities contracting.

The facilities update also included a contract to assist with disposal of surplus devices after the board’s decision to return to MacBooks at the high schools. The vendor presentation included a potential community buyback option for surplus devices; more details will be provided later this summer if execution proceeds.

Facilities staff reported 1,360 facility events and 711 work orders in the previous month, illustrating continued high operational demand across the district’s buildings. The board did not take separate public votes on individual capital projects at this meeting; bids and contract awards will return to the board for approval as required.

Board members also noted the normal calendar of facility usage and expressed appreciation for operations staff handling the workload.
