The vote followed a months-long superintendent search conducted in partnership with the Maryland Association of Boards of Education (MABE). Dr. Bond moved to appoint Martirano; Mr. Green seconded the motion. The board called the question and the motion passed unanimously.
Board members praised the search process and the candidate pool. Mr. Green said the panel conducted an “intense process” and added, “there's not a better candidate that we could have hoped for.” Other board members thanked MABE for its assistance and complimented the board—s collaborative work during the search.
Dr. Martirano, who told the board he was born and raised in Allegany County and is a graduate of Bell High School and Bell Junior-Senior High School, summarized his background and expressed gratitude. "I'm just honored. I want first of all, I wanna thank the board of education for your vote of confidence in this appointment," he said, and later added, "I absolutely love Allegany County. It's where my roots are from." He said he earned his bachelor's and master's degrees from the University of Maryland and his doctorate from Nova Southeastern University.
The board record and comments list Martirano's prior roles as teacher and principal, superintendent of St. Mary's County Public Schools (Maryland), state superintendent in West Virginia, and most recently superintendent of Howard County Public Schools (Maryland).
The board announced that meet-and-greet opportunities with Dr. Martirano will be scheduled in the coming weeks. The board adjourned and noted its next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, May 13.
Action taken: a single motion to appoint Dr. Mike Martirano as superintendent was moved by Dr. Bond, seconded by Mr. Green, and approved unanimously; no amendments or conditions to the appointment were recorded.
