District receives grants including $1 million for solar array at East Salisbury Elementary

The Wicomico County Board of Education received a grants update during the May meeting showing multiple awards received and several pending applications.
Grants reported for April included four awards totaling more than $1,065,000. Details staff read into the record included a $100 bus scholarship from the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum for Mardela Middle and High School field trips; $4,800 from the Lower Shore Workforce Alliance to support Parkside CTE’s summer youth employment program (supporting 20 youth participants); $60,425 from the Maryland Energy Administration to fund an LED lighting retrofit in the Wicomico High School auditorium; and a $1,000,000 award from the Maryland Energy Administration to support installation of a solar array at East Salisbury Elementary.
Staff also said they submitted five additional grants in April totaling more than $3.5 million and will report outcomes at future meetings.
Board members did not debate the awards during the open session; staff characterized the grants as supporting energy-efficiency projects, student career programs and field-trip assistance.
