Representatives of the historic Main Street business community asked the council to move the annual July 4 parade back onto Main Street, presenting a petition of about 50 signatures from Main Street business owners and supporters.
The petition requests the parade begin on 300 West, travel east along Main Street and then turn south onto Highway 89 to proceed toward 700 South, restoring a route that petitioners said historically included the downtown corridor. Petitioners said the route change would improve visibility for Main Street businesses and help attract visitors to the historic district.
Council members and staff responded with operational concerns: reevaluating a parade route a month before the event raises logistics issues including traffic control, insurance and route diagrams; some council and law-enforcement representatives said changing a route on short notice would be difficult. Staff reported the parade permit had not yet been submitted and that route details and insurance would need to be reworked if the council chose to change the route.
No formal motion to change this year’s parade route was made at the meeting; the petition was entered and council members asked staff to consider logistics and report back if the schedule allows further action.
