Residents press Mayfield council for traffic safety measures on Main and Canyon roads

Residents told the Mayfield Town Council on May 14 that speeding on streets including South Hill/Main Street and Canyon Road is creating a safety hazard for children and older residents.
A resident who identified himself as John said, “I see cars going 45, 50, even sometimes 60 miles an hour driving down South Hillgrove, Main Street. And, we've got kids, young kids, toddlers. We've got old people on that street.” He urged the council to add physical traffic-calming measures, saying “We need the speed bump.”
Council members and residents discussed options including placing speed bumps or dips, adding signage, and asking the Utah Highway Patrol or county sheriff to conduct periodic enforcement. Amanda said smaller towns typically rely on county law enforcement unless the town signs a contract for a dedicated patrol; she said a proposal discussed previously estimated about $35,000 for a dedicated patrol officer for limited hours.
The council noted that Main Street is a state road in parts and that the highway patrol could be asked to visit the town for targeted enforcement. Residents and councilmembers also raised complaints about trucks using engine brakes in town and suggested posting “no engine brake” notifications on approaches to the town.
Council members asked staff to coordinate with county and state law enforcement and to evaluate traffic-calming measures; no formal policy change or spending commitment was made at the meeting.
