Mayfield council adopts privacy program to comply with new Utah law

Mayfield Town Council adopted a resolution to implement a town privacy program required under the Utah Government Data Privacy Act.
Town Clerk Amanda read the resolution on the record and told the council the law “requires governmental entities to implement and maintain a privacy program for the processing of personal data.” She explained the program limits collection and sharing of personal information and designates the clerk’s office to oversee training and compliance.
The resolution names the town clerk as the privacy officer, requires employees and contractors to complete mandatory training and directs an annual review of the program. Amanda said the town has posted surveillance signage where cameras are used and that the municipality would report any breach to the Utah Cyber Center and the state attorney general’s office.
Councilmember K. moved to adopt the resolution; Jack seconded. The council voted in favor (4–0) and the clerk said the resolution will take effect immediately.
The council did not identify any existing data breaches in the meeting. Amanda said typical resident data the town holds are addresses, phone numbers and email addresses for utility billing, and noted a past, expired agreement to share a mailing list with a home-service vendor.
The resolution text read into the record cites the Utah Government Data Privacy Act and directs the clerk to oversee implementation and training. The council completed the vote during the regular session.
