The City of Ojai Arts Commission voted to authorize a conservation treatment for the Trimpin Sound Arch and completed routine administrative business at its meeting.
The commission voted to authorize $6,500 to LA Arts Labs LLC (Cura Art / LA Arts Labs LLC listed in the proposal) for conservation treatment of the Trimpin Sound Arch at Libby Bowl. Vice Chair Steiner presented the public-art conservation report and said the conservators are available after work in Los Angeles; the commission discussed timing, public-safety access and coordination with Public Works. Vice Chair Steiner noted best practice is to offer a living artist an opportunity to participate; he said the artist Trimpin declined to perform the work and asked the commission to proceed. The conservators will treat the sculpture’s physical components and will not address audio/electronic elements as part of this contract, commissioners were told.
Nut graf: With a citywide public-art conservation assessment under way, the Arts Commission began work on a high-profile piece at Libby Bowl and set a practice of staged maintenance; the commission also completed two consent votes (minutes adoption and election of a secretary).
Commission discussion addressed scheduling the work after the Ojai Music Festival and noted the city has limited budgeted funds for public-art conservation. Commissioners asked staff to coordinate cones, ladder and site access and to ensure the work does not conflict with Libby Bowl events. Staff confirmed that authorizing funds and entering agreement before fiscal-year end would permit work to be completed afterwards.
