The Carter County Board of Education voted to name the basketball court at Hampton High School in honor of Coach Ned Smith.
Renee Lewis read a letter from Duane Humphrey, Hampton High School’s athletic director, recommending the renaming. The letter outlined Smith’s history with the school, including a state championship in 2023 and more than 500 career wins. Humphrey wrote that it “would be an honor to rename the court of Hampton High School Coach Smith’s Court in Van Huss White Gymnasium.”
Board members moved and seconded the recommendation and approved the naming by roll-call vote with all members recorded as yes.
The board asked Dr. Brandon Carpenter and school administrators to follow up on any necessary signage and event planning to mark the dedication.
No public opposition was recorded in the meeting transcript.
