At a May 13, 2025 meeting of the West Covina Community and Senior Services Commission, commissioners voted to postpone the election of a vice chair until the commission's next meeting in July and selected Commissioner Gail Mason as chair.
Commissioner Gail Mason opened the meeting saying, "I'm Gail Mason, one of the commissioners, and I'll be running the meeting tonight." The body first approved minutes memorializing a March 11 meeting that had lacked a quorum.
Commissioner Betty Baez urged the commission to enforce attendance rules and moved to postpone the vice‑chair election until the next meeting, saying, "we can't keep going on like this month after month without a quorum. It's just getting out of hand." The motion to post‑table the vice‑chair selection passed after members voted "aye;" no opposing votes were called on the record.
Later in the agenda Baez nominated Gail Mason for chair. The nomination received a second and the commission voted to elect Mason as chair. Following the chair election, Mason moved — and members approved — holding over selections for ad hoc committee members until the next meeting.
Meeting participants noted that repeated cancellations and absences have interfered with the commission's ability to provide timely input on items the city council has already acted upon. The commission set its next substantive meeting date and left the vice‑chair and ad hoc committee appointments to be completed when more members are present.
The meeting adjourned at 6:27 p.m.
