Ranchers say San Luis Road erosion, ruts damage vehicles; county to check responsibility

Multiple ranching residents told the commission during public comment that San Luis Road, near Cabezon Peak and bordering McKinley County, has deteriorated and is causing vehicle and equipment damage.

Amanda Torres, who identified herself as a ranch owner, said the road had been maintained regularly for two decades but maintenance stopped in recent years. "The roads are horrible," Torres said, describing ruts more than a foot deep and washboarding that is tearing up trucks and trailers. She said she contacted county and Bureau of Land Management staff and received conflicting responses on who is responsible.

Raul Torres, speaking on his wife's behalf, said he received conflicting information by email: that Commissioner Jones had told district staff the county decommissioned a road grader and gave it to a water authority, while county staff told him there is no contract with the named contractor. "Out of those three options no one is maintaining our roads," he said, and asked the commission to resolve responsibility quickly.

Resident Jeff Tenorio also described thousands of dollars in vehicle repairs from driving the road and urged the commission to determine who is responsible and restore regular maintenance.

County Chair Michael Meek said staff will check the county's records and contact the speakers with an update on responsibility and next steps.
