The Mendocino County Archaeological Commission voted to accept a prior survey and add an accidental discovery clause to Administrative Permit 2019-0106, a proposed 10,000-square-foot mixed-light cannabis cultivation operation on a Timberland Production Zoned parcel.
Commission staff planner Jamie Henry told the commission the archaeological review recorded “no resources found.” Applicant agent Javier Rao recommended approval with an accidental discovery clause. Commissioner Nancy Johnson said the site “has been surveyed twice, and nothing was found.” Chair Keith Granadaoik moved to accept the survey and add the discovery clause; the motion was seconded and passed on a roll-call vote with staff voting yes.
The project, listed to be located roughly 4.2 miles southeast of Comptche Town Center at 26501 Comptche-Ukiah Road (Parcel 125-288-77), was described in county materials as a Type 2B permit in the Timberland Production Zoning District. Jamie Henry characterized the submission as a “pretty standard” application and had no additional comments.
Under the added discovery clause, developers must stop work and notify appropriate authorities if archaeological materials are uncovered during ground-disturbing activities. No further mitigation measures beyond that clause were added at the hearing.
The commission’s action was procedural: it accepted existing survey work and imposed a standard condition rather than requiring a new, project-specific archaeological survey.
