NextEra Energy outlines 200-MW solar project for Cass County; timeline, land participation remain key

Madison Spertise, a project developer with NextEra Energy, told the Cass County Commission on May 14 that the company is in the early stages of developing a 200-megawatt solar project near Harrison Hill that would straddle Interstate 49 on its east side.
Spertise said NextEra has been working on land acquisition and voluntary participation with landowners in the target area and has secured what the company described as site control for roughly 2,000 acres. The developer said the project is in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) queue for a point of interconnection and estimated an operations target of 2029–2030, subject to the queue and continued land participation.
The project remains preliminary, Spertise said, and the acreage cited is for site control, not the final footprint of panels. She said the company starts with a larger boundary and narrows placements based on landowner agreements, environmental exclusions such as streams and waterways, wildlife corridors and engineering constraints. The commission asked about acreage; NextEra responded that SPP’s site-control guidance is roughly six acres per megawatt, which the company uses as an initial planning assumption.
Chris Evans, introduced by Spertise as a community project representative with NextEra Energy, attended the commission meeting with Spertise. County commissioners present at the meeting were Bob Houston, Mike Moreland and Jeff Fletcher. A county official indicated NextEra would coordinate with the county codes director, Valerie, on follow-up questions.
No land-use permits, zoning changes or formal approvals were before the commission at this meeting; the presentation was informational only and occurred during the public-comment portion of the agenda. The developers left contact information for county staff and asked to be put in touch with the codes office for any follow-up.
