Committee approves $900,000 from Overtown trust fund for neighborhood improvements

The Appropriations Committee approved an item on May 6 authorizing $900,000 from the Overtown trust fund for neighborhood improvement projects. Commissioner Cohen Higgins, who pulled the item for questions, asked for the current balance of the Overtown trust; a staff member replied that the balance before the $900,000 allocation was approximately $5.7 million.

Commissioners and community speakers emphasized including local residents and neighborhood groups in project planning, citing longtime concerns in Overtown, Brownsville and Liberty City about displacement and lack of community input during redevelopment. Kenneth Brown, a community speaker, urged that Model City and other local stakeholders be included in project planning and asked for attention to housing needs for residents experiencing homelessness.

Sponsor remarks noted the CRA’s efforts to attract dining, retail and other businesses and said the trust fund helps support local entrepreneurs and improve public spaces. Commissioners asked staff to clarify procurement and oversight for projects funded by the trust and to ensure promised community benefits from prior agreements are tracked and enforced.
