Several residents used the public‑comment period to press the Township of Ocean School District for turf availability for a newly forming Pop Warner football team, to ask about recent changes to facilities fee documents, and to object to posting medical leave reasons for staff.
Casey, a resident from Oakhurst with four children in the district, said the group could not secure turf dates for home games at Ocean Township High School because the rec center and the high school staff told them there was no availability. Casey asked whether the board could "rescind some dates" allocated to a soccer organization that she said occupies many weekend dates and requested four dates for home games between early September (after Labor Day) and about Nov. 9. Casey suggested games could be scheduled Friday nights when the high school is away or weekend slots when other groups are not using the turf.
Alex Hayes, another resident, supported the Pop Warner effort and urged the board to be more inclusive in allocating field time. Hayes also raised a question about a reduced coaches’ fee that appears in the district’s facilities documents; he said he could not find a record of a board vote approving that reduced fee and asked where it is in district policy.
A separate public comment raised privacy concerns about publishing reasons for staff leaves. The commenter objected to posting maternity, paternity or FMLA reasons in meeting materials and suggested the district list only that the staff member is on leave, without medical or family‑leave detail. The commenter referenced HIPAA and family‑leave privacy as the basis for the concern.
Board members did not take action during public comment but later in the meeting approved several routine consent items by roll call, including approval of the April 29 minutes; a personnel package that included items 8.1–8.14 (with a recusal noted); financial items 9.1–9.11 (recusal on 9.10); and instructional items 10.1–10.4. Missus Waller introduced Kelly as the district’s new director of special services during the personnel portion of the meeting.
Votes at a glance - Minutes (April 29, regular and work session): Moved by Mr. Dolan; motion carried by roll call with board members voting yes (Brady, Dalton, Dam, Gilman, McGovern, Stevens, McCarthy). - Personnel items 8.1–8.14: Moved by Miss McGovern; seconded (not specified). Missus Gilman recused from items 8.3, 8.4, 8.5 and 8.14; the motion carried for the remaining items. - Financial/resource items 9.1–9.11: Motion carried; Missus Gilman recused from item 9.10. - Instruction items 10.1–10.4: Motion carried by roll call.
No new policy vote on facilities fees or leave‑privacy rules occurred at the meeting; administration was asked previously to compile facility‑use revenue data and will return in June with a report that could inform fee policy. Board members and administrators encouraged residents to submit formal facility‑use applications (first‑come, first‑serve) while staff complete the revenue review.
