Residents ask Boca Raton to address long-term boat moorings; city to investigate limits on local authority

At the May 13 meeting a resident asked the council to investigate vessels that appear to occupy slips or anchorages long-term in a city waterway, limiting access for other residents as hurricane season approaches.
Dennis Popaka, who identified himself as a boater, told the council he observed many vessels remaining in the lake for long periods and asked the city to flag and enforce limits similar to state rules that give 45 days for anchoring before action.
City Manager Brown said staff will look into Popaka's concerns and noted the city has limited authority over the Intracoastal Waterway. Brown said the city has repeatedly asked the state to consider municipal authority over the ICW and will continue to press the issue; he encouraged residents to contact state legislators while staff investigates enforcement options in the meantime.
No enforcement action was announced; staff said it would follow up with the resident and research applicable state and local rules.
