Commission hears crossing-guard changes as LISD redraws boundaries; one site to be removed, two relocated

Barbara Hill, supervisor of the town’s crossing-guard program, presented the May 2025 school crossing guard index and the staffing implications of LISD’s 2025–26 boundary and school-closure changes. Hill told the commission the town will remove the crossing-guard site at Timber Creek (the north-side crossing in front of Flower Mound Baptist Church) because the data show very few children use that crosswalk to walk or bike to school.
Hill said the last three counts at that location averaged 1.9 students in the morning and 28.2 students in the afternoon and that the site is effectively a parent drop-off area rather than a student pedestrian crossing. She recommended removing the site starting in the fall and reallocating resources.
LISD will close Garden Ridge Elementary and redistribute students to Forest Vista Elementary and Donald Elementary. Hill said staff will relocate the two crossing guards who currently staff Garden Ridge to a Forest Vista crosswalk that is already marked but not staffed. That new staffing will be implemented quickly once the town establishes the temporary school zone and coordinates with the police department; Hill and staff said implementation could occur at the start of the school year if counts justify it.
Hill also described other boundary carve-outs that may require monitoring and possible staffing changes near Downing Middle School and Lamar Middle School. The town will perform kid counts in September — after the first-day novelty has passed — and will base any new staffing on those counts and on observed pedestrian patterns. Hill said the town’s crossing-guard staffing maps and locations are posted on the town’s GIS site for public review.
