The Kern County Board of Supervisors approved a lease, with an option to purchase, for property at 601 Gardner Field Road to be used as a community substation by the Kern County Sheriff's Office. The board approved the agreement at the May 13 meeting; the 10-year term commences May 13, 2025.
Supervisor Parlier, who pulled item 31 from the consent calendar for discussion, said the Taft Sheriff's Station has been deteriorating for years due to soil issues and described the new leased facility as a "game changer" for Taft, thanking the sheriff's department and General Services for arranging the agreement. The motion to approve passed with a recorded vote of 3 ayes, 2 absent.
Action details in the staff report show the agreement is with Milly Development Company LLC for the property at 601 Gardner Field Road and includes a purchase option to secure a permanent site for sheriff's operations in Taft. The lease term in the agreement is 10 years beginning May 13, 2025.
The board recorded the vote as approved (3 ayes, 2 absent). Staff said no public comment was received at the time the item was heard.
