Broomfield council approves $1.2 million auditorium lighting and tech upgrade

The City and County of Broomfield City Council on a unanimous vote approved a construction agreement with Luxe AVL Inc. to upgrade the lighting and technical production systems in the Broomfield Auditorium. The contract award is part of a $1.2 million capital improvement budget for the project.
Council members said the equipment is at end of life and routine repairs were increasingly difficult because parts are no longer widely available. Brian Grama, the city’s CIP manager, told the council the work will “replace a 20‑year‑old system” and add a ceiling‑mounted lowering grid, LED fixtures, updated controls and new audio equipment to improve safety, accessibility and the range of rental uses.
Staff and library leadership said the auditorium hosts roughly 120 days of programming each year and draws an estimated 25,000 attendees annually. Catherine Lineup, director of Library, Arts, History and CSU Extension, said the upgrades will reduce the need for scaffolding to service fixtures, lower operating energy costs and help retain performing‑arts renters who otherwise book larger or more modern venues outside Broomfield.
The project budget and status: staff reported approximately $225,000 already encumbered for design and preconstruction; the low responsive bid from Luxe AVL was $888,000; and a construction contingency and authorized contract amendment allowance bring the total project authorization to the $1.2 million appropriation in CIP Fund 20. Staff said Fund 20 is financed by sales tax and a dedicated mill levy component used for capital improvements.
In public comment, local arts and community users urged the council to approve the work to avoid potential show cancellations and preserve rental revenue for local nonprofits and school performance groups.
The council approved the construction agreement by roll call; staff said the contractor expects to complete work during a planned late‑summer closure window that staff has already reserved on the auditorium calendar.
Staff will return to council with any contract amendments within the manager’s authorized 10% change order allowance and will confirm the construction schedule for affected renters.
