Contra Costa County supervisors on May 13 proclaimed May 2025 as National Foster Care Month and heard a presentation from Children and Family Services highlighting the county's foster-care population and recruitment needs.
Rosalind Gentry, Children and Family Services director, said Contra Costa had 584 children and youth in out-of-home placements and that about 31% of those children were placed with relatives or non-related extended family members. Gentry and presenters emphasized the county's collaboration with foster parents, social workers and community partners and invited residents to consider foster-care orientation sessions; the presentation included a Mann family video and foster parents Kelly and David Mann spoke about respite care and the rewards of fostering teens.
Supervisors thanked foster families and agency staff, described foster parents as a "lifeline" for children separated from their families of origin, and noted concerns about supports for youth leaving foster care. County staff provided a public contact for those interested in becoming foster parents: (925) 655-4230 and EHSD.org for orientation sessions.
The board adopted the proclamation during the presentations and posed for photographs with foster families and staff.
