Parks and Recreation staff asked joint town and county boards to restore several items to the recommended FY26 budget using a larger fund balance available to the department. Among the additions staff specifically highlighted was an annual software subscription for wildfire-detection AI, estimated at $45,000.
Fire Chief Mike Moyer told the boards the AI system is intended to operate in coordination with federal partners and to focus primarily on developed areas and egress routes close to homes and commercial development. The technology analyzes video feeds and uses machine-learning detection to flag columns of smoke or anomalous heat signatures; human operators review flagged events and dispatch partners as appropriate.
Commissioners asked about false positives and performance in campground and public-land settings; Moyer said the system can be trained to recognize regularly occurring nonfire sources and that the combination of AI and human review improves response speed and situational awareness for both local and federal fire partners. The annual software subscription will be an ongoing operating expense if adopted; the capital portion of the detection program was already included in the recommended capital budget.
No member of either board objected to adding the subscription line back into Parks and Recreationthe boards signaled general acceptance for staff to move forward with the restoration of these items into the recommended budget. Staff will include the subscription as an ongoing expense in the FY26 operating budget if the separate staff-approval processes and budget adoptions proceed as scheduled.
